Fred Roy & Editor Dan Arabie
From the Desk of Editor:
This issue (May) of the DEAF BAYOU e-news dedicates to Fred Roy, lll, who will resign from Louisiana Commission for the Deaf (LCD) on May 12th, and his YANKEE fiancee take him home to New York to be closer with her family. He had been GREAT PLUS to provide BETTER programs in helping with deaf, deaf-blind, & SHHH, especially interpreters in our struggling state of Louisiana. When he moves to New York, we will promise ourselves that our forces will be Deaf, Deaf-Blind, & SHH On The Move. No matte where he lives, our hearts will ALWAYS remain with him FOREVER. (Clear my throat…Sniffs…Excuse me, let me get my handkerchief!)
Next column of the DEAF BAYOU e-news - Advococy by Linda Annala, M.Ed., contributing writer, will be scheduled to distribute on May 10th. Be on the look out!

DASH FOR DEAF KIDS
The Fifth Annual Dash for Deaf Kids was held on March 25, 2006 at LSD. The 5K run and 1-mile fun run was a huge success with 100 participants and 17 sponsors. Runners for the Fun Run started their race at 8:15 a.m. for one lap around the LSD campus. Mary Shortess was our Fun Run winner with a time of 9:07. Next, the 5K runners took to the streets of Riverbend and returned to LSD to complete their trek. The overall men’s winner was Kevin McDaniel, age 14, who clocked a time of 18:00 minutes. Audrey Jackson won the woman’s division with a winning time of 20:02. Both received gift certificates for running shoes from Varsity Sports. The net proceeds of $5,006 will go toward the many programs benefiting the students of Louisiana School for the Deaf. Special thanks to Club South Runners, LSD Foundation Board, student-volunteers from LSU, and participants who helped make the 2006 Dash the best one ever!

DID YOU KNOW??
The amount an individual may pass onto his/her heirs estate tax free with proper planning in place is $2 million in 2006. The total was $1 million in 2003, a year in which 2.45 million Americans died. Since most estate tax returns (Form 706) are filed in the year following the year of death, then the 30,276 estate tax returns filed in 2004 on which federal estate taxes were paid indicates that only 1 out of every 81 deaths from 2003 resulted in the payment of federal estate taxes in 2004 (source: IRS, CDC).
CODA (Children of Deaf Adults)
Besides bowling highlights, Nikki Arabie, herself, continues to achieve more honors at her employment at Winn-Dixie Marketplace, Dulles Dr.and has chosen as Top Cashier of the Week for three (3) consecutive weeks, and her name is engraved on the board. When you shop there, you could tell her “Hi & Congrats!”. She is proud daughter of Dan Arabie (LSD ’80) and Cathy (Ezell) Royer (LSD ’79). Nikki, Way to Go!
