From the desk of Editor:

September: The best way to prepare for life is to begin to live.

Date(s) to Remember:

  • Labor Day (USA & Canada): Monday, September 3rd
  • Grandparents’ Day (USA): Sunday, September 9th
  • Patriot Day: Tuesday, September 11th

This issue (Septembert) of the DEAF BAYOU e-news dedicates to all grandparents in observance of the National Grandparents Day – Sunday, September 9th marking 34th anniversary…that day has a threefold purpose as follows:

·        To honor grandparents.

·        To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children.

·        To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.

As grandpa, Editor Dan encourages all of you taking your grandchildren somewhere like parks, family reunion, & more fun places to enjoy and relax.

------

History:

The establishment of this holiday began with Marian McQuade, who spearheaded a campaign for the establishment of an official holiday in honor of grandparents. In 1973 her efforts paid off, when Governor Arch Moore declared the first Grandparent's Day in West Virginia.

Later that year, Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) introduced a resolution in the United States Senate to make Grandparent's Day a national holiday. Five years later, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day and Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation.
