Gallaudet University Logo Redesign Announcement E-mail
Dear Campus Community:

I am pleased to announce we have decided to move forward with developing a new logo for the university.

As you may know, in recent years Gallaudet conducted an in-depth examination of the university’s brand and logo identities. The creation of a new logo will be the first step in moving forward in these areas.

Over the years we have seen various units within the university proceed on their own to develop separate identities; what has been missing in some of these actions has been the realization that it is “Gallaudet University” which must be the priority for all of us in our thinking about how we present ourselves to our many publics. We want a common representation through a logo that reflects our common pride in who we are.

I have asked that a committee be formed to take on this task. I ask that the new logo include the university name and honor the traditionalism that is such a significant part of our university. At the same time, I ask the committee to develop a methodology through which the new logo can enable those who need a separate awareness to achieve that while maintaining consistency with the university’s broader identity. Finally, I also ask that the committee bring forth a logo that is usable across the range of expected usage including presentation to external and internal audiences through marketing campaigns, advertising, web representation, e-newsletters, letterhead and envelopes, clothing, business cards, pins, signage, slide show templates, and so on.

The committee, to be chaired by Catherine Murphy, Executive Director of Communications and Public Relations, will work over the next few months to: 1) propose a new logo and develop written guidelines for its usage, and 2) develop a transition plan for implementing the new logo throughout the university.

In addition to Catherine the committee members are: Gary Aller, Sam Atkinson, Scott Carollo, Jane Dillehay, Zhou Fang, Dylan Hinks, Susan Jacoby, Susan King, Debra Lawson, Angela McCaskill, Michael Moore, Earl Parks, Darlene Prickett, Charity Reedy Hines, Elena Ruiz, Matt Sickon, Nicole Sutliffe, and Danielle Yearout.

The committee is large, but at the same time we recognize that there are others in the environment who might have wished to serve on the committee. For those, and others, we urge you to communicate any suggestions, concerns, or issues to Catherine to be shared with the committee. When the committee finishes their assignments, we will have a public comment period, followed by a discussion at an early fall meeting of the University Council, and then final action. The broad representation of the committee members and opportunities for input will ensure that we have the fullest participation from across the university in this important task.

The university logo is a significant part of the collegiate experience for all of the Gallaudet community, as it promotes pride in Gallaudet University as well as a sense of community for us all. Creating a new logo is an exciting time for all of us and I look forward to the participation of the community in this historic process which will reflect both our endearing traditionalism and our openness to the future that are such a large part of our university.

Warmly,
Alan
