Traveling while you are deaf-blind

As we enter the summer vacation season, it's a great thrill to get in a car with our family or friends and escape from the daily grind of working, school and daily life. However, not everyone can just drive to their next destination.

Imagine if deaf-blind people can travel independently without having to rely on family, friends and strangers for assistance. Technology exists today that makes this possible.

A true story:

A few years ago, a deaf-blind person needed to go to a local restaurant in Washington, DC. He is totally deaf and totally blind, but that did not stop him from taking a cab. He made a phone call with a portable braille notetaker to call a relay service, using the
Instant Messaging feature on his notetaker. He got a cab to meet
him where he needed to be picked up. On the way, the cab driver got
lost. The deaf-blind person used the GPS feature in his notetaker to
track his trip and realized the driver was lost.

This deaf-blind person directed the driver to the restaurant by using simple hand signs: "Turn left", "Turn right", "Go forward", and "Back up". Sure enough, he found the restaurant where he needed to go. The driver was in shock, wondering how a person who cannot hear and see could give him accurate directions.

You see, it's quite possible that deaf-blind people can use technology to help them travel more easily and independently.

For us to make this dream a reality, AADB needs your help. With your gift, we can:

* Establish programs at our national symposiums, state conventions, and other places to train deaf-blind people how to use technology;

* Establish a "Train the Trainer" program to teach technology specialists about deaf-blind people and their specific needs;

* Help deaf-blind people pay for needed repairs on their equipment, which can cost over $1,000 or more; and

* Help deaf-blind people purchase new equipment or replace old and outdated technology when no other resources are available.

A deaf-blind person uses a Telebraille to read a conversation which her SSP is typing (right). The Telebraille has not been available since 1995.
