Louisiana School for the Deaf coach Chip Stirling got going-away presents from his track teams on Thursday night.

The Eagles won the Class C girls state title going away, while the LSD boys picked up a runner-up finish at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association/State Farm Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Meanwhile, local rivals Bethany Christian and Hosanna Christian made it a Baton Rouge sweep in the girls Class B competition at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Stirling, who is set to retire at the end of the school year, saw his girls team win their first Class C state title, scoring 106 points to finish ahead of Saline (72) and Singer (59).

Saline won the Class C boys title with 89 points. LSD (73) and Dubach (51) completed the top three.

Bethany won the Class B girls title with 52 points, with Hosanna (42) and Fairview (41) not far behind. Glenmora won the Class B boys title for the second straight year with 67, just ahead of Lacassine (63) and Epps (53).

“This is great,” Stirling said. “The girls have worked hard all year. The boys have had this success before, but it’s a first for the girls.

“The guys did what we thought they could do. Saline just had a little more than we did.”

LSD’s Ana Shelton and Mariah Georgetown of Bethany swept the girls Outstanding Performer awards.

Shelton won the triple jump in 33-7 and the 200 meters in 26.86 seconds. She also was second in the long jump and the 100 meters for LSD.

Bethany’s Georgetown set one Class B meet record and came within a hundredth of second in another.

The junior won the high jump with a record mark of 5-5. She won the 100 meters in 12.23, just off the record, and won the 200 in 25.26 seconds. Georgetown also anchored the winning 4 x 200 relay team (1:49.47).

“I can’t say enough about her,” Bethany coach David Georgetown said of his daughter. “She’s evolved and is doing some great things. But it was a team effort. Even with what Mariah did we needed everybody.”

Hosanna coach Pat Doise accepted the runner-up trophy by himself. His team members had already left, figuring they would finish fourth.

“They all left … that tells you what a big surprise this is,” Doise said. “As well as we did, I thought we’d finish fourth. We both (Hosanna and Bethany) got a lot out of one competitor. But without the others we couldn’t have pulled it off without all the girls.”

Like Bethany, Hosanna had a triple winner in Laticia Watson. She won the triple jump (34-9 ‰), 100 hurdles (16.60) and the 300 hurdles (47.90).

While winning the 300 hurdles, Watson gave Hosanna a 42-38 lead over Bethany in the Class B girls battle. Georgetown put Bethany in front for good by winning the 200.

LSU signee Joseph Caraway of Lacassine provided one of the biggest highlights of the day by winning the Class B boys pole vault with a height of 16 feet, shattering the previous class record. The mark ranks in the top 10 nationally.

The meet’s Outstanding Performers for the boys were Courtland Key of Gibsland-Coleman in Class C and Josh Goree of Glenmora in Class B. Key won the 1,600 (4:59.56) and the 3,200 (11:28.34). Goree won the 100 (10.84), the 400 (49.18) and finally the 200 (22.19).

Jessica Fekete of Holden was an early double winner in Class B, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 17-9‰ and the shot put with 37-5Ø toss. Hosanna Christian won the Class B boys 4 x 100 relay in 45.11.

In Class C, LSD moved into first place in the girls division after 14 events. A third-place finish by Tameeka Eackles gave the Eagles 68 points, six ahead of Saline. Victoria Ward won the pole vault (6-0), Alexia Powell won the 300 hurdles (52.17) and capped the meet by winning the 4 x 400 relay (4:44.82).

Fifth-grader Gabrielle Jennings of Slidell’s First Baptist pulled off the Class C distance double, winning the 1,600 (5:40.24) and the 3,200 (12:03.61).

The LSD boys were led by Darryl Carr, who won the discus in 135-4, and Rhett Lebeouf, who won the pole vault in 9-6.

Michael Williams helped boost the Eagles with second-place finishes in the 400 meters and triple jump. Quentin Ross took third in the 110 hurdles. Charleston Morrisse of Family Christian, who the 800 (2:09.48), was another local Class C boys winner.
