1961

~ Celebratin’ 45th Anniversary of LSD’s first-ever

National Deaf PrepFootball (11-Man) Champions ~

From the Editor’s Desk:

This issue (October) of the DEAF BAYOU e-news dedicates to 45th Anniversary of Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD) first-ever National Deaf Prep Champions in 1961; they went undefeated (8 - 0) and advanced to LHSAA first round playoff, eliminated by Clinton.  See LSD’s 1961 schedule in the SPORTS section.

BEING OLE’ DAN: Countdown being first-ever GRANDPA: 128 days left; my oldest daughter, Kirsten is having a baby BOY named Landon James, due on February 5, 2007.  DEAF BAYOU editor (Grandpa) will keep you posted when he arrives and will hand him football for a TOUCHDOWN!  For sure, Grandpa will spike it for him afterward.

When we change our clocks

At 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 29th, groggy Americans will turn their clocks back one hour, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The federal law that established "daylight time" in this country does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But if a state chooses to observe DST, it must follow the starting and ending dates set by the law. From 1986 to 2006 this has been the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but starting in 2007, it will be observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding about a month to daylight saving time

(Source:  www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1 )

Next column of the DEAF BAYOU e-news - What's Coming Up and Counting in October? by Linda Annala, M.Ed., columnist of Tips for Leaders, will be scheduled to distribute on October 10th. Be on the look out!

HOUSTON MOSS the GRRREAT:

In honor of Deaf Awareness Week, Hamilton Relay is pleased to recognize Houston Moss as the 2006 Deaf Leader for the State of Louisiana.  These following honorees within states-relay are:

Ø      Idaho: Ranie Mattingly

Ø      Iowa: Don Miksell

Ø      Kentucky: Kevin Martin

Ø     Louisiana: Houston Moss

Ø      Montana: Betty Van Tighem

Ø      Nebraska: Dr. George Conrad Propp

Ø      Rhode Island: Steve Florio

Ø      Washington, D.C.: Fred Michael Beam

Ø      Wisconsin: Daniel Houlihah

Ø      Wyoming: Heather Parsons

Source: Hamilton Relay, September 25 - 29, 2006

Editor’s Note:  Like Editor Dan, Houston Moss (LSD ’68) is a die-hard LSU fan; he bleeds PURPLE.  He is one of many activists, as well as a well-known person around us in Louisiana for many years…Let’s HAND-WAVE to Houston!

SPECIAL HONOR:

Nikki Arabie, senior (Editor’s youngest daughter) and her Lafayette High School band (3-time State Champions; 2003, 2004, & 2005) receive a formal invitation from Tom Benson, owner & his firm, New Orleans Saints, the NFL team to perform for the pre-game and halftime shows during the New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday, October 8th at the Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans.  During the pre-game show, they will be designed in spelling, S-A-I-N-T-S on the football field.  They will surprisingly be reserved to be seated in the VIP section which originally ranges $3,000 each ticket and even a chance to meet those Saints players to be autographed.

ST. LOUIS BOUND:

Another sensational season for Nikki Arabie & her Lafayette High School band members, they will be traveling to St. Louis, Missouri to compete for the National High School Championship (Band of America) on Thursday – Sunday, October 19th – 22nd.  Last season they ranked 8th nationally where they were at St. Petersburg, Florida.  As they continue to stay focused, they are seeking much better & electrifying performances than what they did last year in attempting to accomplish that goal for better ranking and well-recognition as well.  The final result will be acknowledged to you in the next issue of the DEAF BAYOU e-news
