New Orleans, Louisiana (DBE) – National Association of the Deaf (NAD) kicked off one-week long 49th biennial national conference along with thousands of attendants (more than 1,500) including close to 30 deaf-blind (DB) incoming registrars, the largest number ever last week.  The conference includes high quality speakers, wealth of educated workshop presenters, enjoyable entertainments (ASL Live, College Bowl Quiz, and Miss Deaf America), and more.

The World of Darkness & Silence, one of nearly 80 workshops was presented by three (3) co-presenters, Dan Arabie, Jackie Broussard, and Mark Landreneau, all native of Louisiana, in which it was their first time experiencing workshop at NAD and could surely gain better experience and knowledge next time when next DB workshop provides.  The workshop educated everyone about the life of Deaf-Blindness and had shown a DVD about a new technology for DB mobility which leads into independent living.  To sponsor a DB workshop -- thanks to those hearty and wonderful sponsors, Arabie Family, Wolf Family, Louisiana Acadiana Deaf-Blind Citizens, Sorenson Communications, and CSDVRS and especially a formal letter of well-wishers from Louisiana Association of the Deaf.

There was first-ever ASL Live a.k.a American Idol performing with ten (10) semifinalists including deaf-blind performer, Jagannath “JAG” Einhorn of Tampa, Florida. All were awesome in great style of comedies.  Jag made cut for Top 5 but did not make in for Top 3.  He is under consideration being a guest appearance performing at the next year’s LADBC annual DB picnic…stay tuned!

Another exciting entertainment, College Bowl Quiz were challenged by three (3) universities, CSUN, Gallaudet, and R.I.T. competing each other to answer mass of tough questions through three rounds. The final results in points were Gallaudet: 127; R.I.T.: 76; CSUN: 74.

Traditionally, NAD is hosting Miss Deaf America every two years (even-numbered year) along with beautiful young ladies representing their own states.  To this occasion, it was sponsored by Hawk Relay.  The winner of Miss Deaf America is Michelle Lapides of Maryland followed by Miss Deaf Texas (1st Runner-up) and Miss Deaf Missouri (2nd Runner-up).

Upon Miss Deaf America, DB attendants were invited into the 9-0 party at the suite on the 37th floor hosted by Bob Green, Deaf-Blind Coordinator of Georgia.

(Note:  9-0 meaning Usher Syndrome in French Canada, in which it was invented by Christine “Coco” Roschaert and Jagannath Einhorn)
